Why Georeferenced Data Matters: What GPS-Located Anomalies Give Your Maintenance Team

A thermal anomaly without a location is an observation. A thermal anomaly with a GPS coordinate is an actionable finding. The difference between those two things determines whether your maintenance team can act on the data efficiently or spend time searching for the fault.

What georeferencing means in practice

Every image captured by SkySpectra's thermal platform is tagged at the point of capture with GPS coordinates and centimetre-level RTK positioning. When that data is processed into an orthomosaic, every pixel in the output has a known real-world position. An anomaly identified in the thermal dataset can be located on a map to within a metre or two of its actual position on the ground.

For a solar farm with 50,000 panels, that precision is the difference between directing a technician to a specific module in a specific row and telling them the fault is somewhere in the southwest quadrant.

For an industrial facility with complex rooftop plant and electrical infrastructure, GPS-located findings mean your maintenance team arrives at the right location with the right tools, rather than conducting a secondary manual search across a large asset footprint.

What it means for your O&M workflow

Georeferenced anomaly data is built to integrate with your existing asset management systems. Where your team needs to work with it directly, the KMZ and GeoTIFF outputs are compatible with standard GIS platforms - available on request, for overlay onto your site layout, import into maintenance management software, or comparison against previous datasets.

Every finding is delivered with its GPS coordinates in the report itself, so your O&M team or contractor can navigate to the location and action the repair without waiting on a separate data handover.

What it means for your warranty position

Warranty claims on solar modules require documented evidence of the fault - its location, its appearance, and when it was identified. A georeferenced thermal dataset with timestamped anomaly locations provides exactly that evidence in a format that is specific enough to be actionable and defensible enough to support a claim.

A general report noting thermal anomalies were present is not the same thing. GPS coordinates, anomaly imagery, and a timestamped dataset are.

What it means for change detection

When subsequent captures are conducted over the same asset using the same flight parameters, the georeferenced datasets can be compared directly. New anomalies are identified against the baseline. Known anomalies are tracked for progression. Areas that have been repaired are confirmed as resolved.

This is what separates a scheduled monitoring program from a series of disconnected site visits. The georeferencing is what makes the comparison meaningful.
